Watts Rising FAQs
How can Watts Rising offer this program at no cost and who is paying for it?
Watts Rising is supported by California Strategic Growth Council’s Transformative Climate Communities program with funds from California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment – particularly in disadvantaged communities. You do not have to pay for your system, but you must meet our guidelines to qualify, such as owning your home, having a roof in good condition, meeting the program’s income requirements, and living in the Watts Rising project area. The only thing we ask you to contribute is, if possible, bathroom access for our staff and volunteers on the days of your install.
Why do this?
You will considerably lower your monthly electricity bill at no cost to you!
Who owns the solar system? Is it a lease? Do I need to put money down? Who maintains the system? What maintenance is required?
Watts Rising completely pays for your solar energy system. You do not have to put money down and you will never make any kind of lease or financing payment. The system will be owned by you and warranted by GRID Alternatives for 10 years. As part of the program you will receive system monitoring as well as workmaship and equipment warranties.
How long will it take to get my system up and running?
After you sign your agreement, we estimate our process will take six to nine months, depending on how quickly the Department of Building and Safety and your utility company complete their part of the process.
Who will install the solar PV system?
GRID Alternatives will install your solar PV system. GRID’s solar program is officially supported by the State of California, the California Public Utilities Commission, and Southern California Edison. It has been praised by both CA Governor Jerry Brown and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. GRID has also been featured in multiple news stories on TV and in print.
How much will I save with solar?
We work to offset 80% of your electricity bill. Your savings will vary depending on the size, position, and shading of your roof, and how much electricity you consume. We custom design every project.
How much will I save with my energy efficiency retrofit?
We will work to reduce your energy usage by 20% with energy efficient appliances. Actual savings will depend on your existing appliances inyour home.
What documents do I need to qualify?
- Tax returns for anyone in your household that filed taxes last year
- Proof of home ownership (your mortgage statement, property tax, deed, or homeowner’s insurance)
- A recent (within three months) copy of your utility bill
- Your utility’s summary of your last 12 months of energy usage
Will a city inspector come to my property?
Building permits will be pulled for the solar installation and a city inspector will inspect the completed system at your property.
How will you prioritize and select applicants for this program?
Solar Watts and Energy Efficiency Retrofit participants will be selected on a first-come first-served basis.
